Do you dream of learning to surf in Biarritz? It's an excellent choice. With its iconic beaches and waves suitable for different levels, Biarritz is one of the best places in France to start.
However, progress in surfing doesn't depend solely on time spent in the water. Many beginners make the same mistakes, which slows down their learning and can sometimes lead to frustration.
Here are the 10 mistakes we most often observe during our surf lessons in Biarritz.

1. Choosing a board that is too small
This is certainly the most common mistake.
Many beginners want to use a shortboard because it resembles those used by experienced surfers. In reality, a board with more volume offers greater stability, makes catching waves easier, and allows for much faster progression.
Having the right equipment makes all the difference during the first few sessions.
2. Trying to surf waves that are too big
Impressive waves don't necessarily lead to better learning.
To progress, it's best to surf gentle, consistent waves. They offer more time to position yourself, stand up, and work on your technique.
In Biarritz, some beaches are particularly suitable for beginners depending on the conditions of the day.
3. Look at your feet when you get up
When it comes time for take-off , many beginners look at their feet.
The result: the body leans forward, balance becomes unstable and a fall occurs quickly.
The best reflex is to look ahead, in the direction you want to go.
4. Getting up too early

Impatience is normal when you are starting out.
But trying to stand up before the wave actually pushes the board often leads to missing the wave.
It's best to feel the acceleration of the board before performing your take-off .
5. Row using only your arms
Good rowing doesn't depend solely on strength.
Position on the board, core engagement, and movement quality are essential for moving forward efficiently while conserving energy.
Using the correct technique allows you to get more out of the session.
6. To be poorly positioned on the board
Even with good paddling and a nice wave, a bad position on the board can prevent you from getting going.
If you're too far back, the board will slow down and you'll miss the wave. Too far forward, and the nose of the board risks plunging into the water.
Finding the right balance takes a little practice, but a few adjustments are often enough to transform a session. It's one of the first things we correct during a surf lesson, because a good stance makes it easier to take off and catch many more waves.
7. Wanting to catch all the waves
It's tempting to ride every wave.
However, observing the ocean, choosing the right waves and understanding how they work is an integral part of the progression.
Surfing is as much a sport of observation as it is of practice.

8. Not looking at the ocean enough
Before entering the water, take a few minutes to observe:
where the waves break;
where are the other surfers?
the meaning of series;
potential currents.
This observation often saves valuable time.
9. Thinking that progression is linear
Even experienced surfers have bad days.
Some sessions will be excellent, others more difficult.
Each outing in the water nevertheless allows one to develop their experience and their understanding of the ocean.
Patience is one of the most important qualities in surfing.
10. Wanting to learn alone
The internet is full of advice, but nothing replaces feedback from an instructor.
A few corrections to your position, your paddling or your take-off can save you several weeks of progress.
A surf lesson also allows you to choose the right spot according to the day's conditions, learn the safety rules and quickly gain confidence in the water.
In summary
When you're starting out in surfing, it's normal to make mistakes.
The important thing is to identify them quickly in order to progress under good conditions.
With the right equipment, suitable waves and a few technical tips, progress often comes faster than you imagine.
